When I first started my role as an Information Security Advisor, I asked my director for book or resource recommendations to better understand my current role and the world of cybersecurity. He suggested the book Confident Cyber Security: How to Get Started in Cyber Security and Futureproof Your Career from Jessica Barker.

A Thoughtful Approach to Cybersecurity

The book offers readers a comprehensive and accessible guide to navigating into the complex world of cybersecurity. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on human behavior and psychology in relation to cybersecurity, a perspective often overlooked in many other cybersecurity resources. Jessica Barker brings a refreshing perspective to the subject, emphasizing that security is not just about technology but also about understanding and influencing human behavior.

Key Themes Explored

  • Human-Centric Security: One of the book's standout features is its focus on the human element in cybersecurity. Barker effectively explores how human behavior, including both employees and adversaries, plays a significant role in security incidents. By understanding the psychology behind cyberthreats and employee actions, organizations are able to protect themselves.
  • Practical Guidance: The book is well provided with practical guidance that can be applied by individuals and organizations. Barker provides actionable steps, case studies, and real-world examples that help readers understand complex security issues.
  • Risk Management: The author takes a risk-based approach to cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of identifying and managing potential risks effectively. This perspective encourages organizations to allocate their resources wisely and prioritize security measures based on their specific needs.
  • Communication and Education: Barker's approach accentuates the importance of effective communication and employee education in building a strong security culture within organizations. She offers insights into how to engage and train employees to become proactive in defending against cyberthreats.

Book Review

One of the strengths of the book is its clear and engaging writing style. Barker does an excellent job of breaking down technical concepts into easily understandable terms without losing the depth and nuance of the subject. This makes the book an excellent choice for beginners who might feel overwhelmed by more technical texts.

Furthermore, the book is not just about technical knowledge. Barker emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of cybersecurity. She investigates into the psychological and sociological aspects, highlighting how human factors play a crucial role in security. This approach is refreshing and adds depth to the reader's understanding of the field.

The chapters are well-structured, each focusing on different facets of cybersecurity, from the basics of the technology to the ethical and legal considerations. The book also offers career advice, which is invaluable for those looking to enter the field. Barker's insights into the industry, based on her extensive experience, provide a realistic view of what a career in cybersecurity involves.

However, readers seeking advanced technical details may find the book a bit basic. It's more of an introduction than a deep dive into specific technologies or advanced security strategies.

Overall, Confident Cyber Security – How to Get Started in Cyber Security and Futureproof Your Career is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the field. Its accessible language, broad coverage of topics, and insightful advice make it a valuable resource for aspiring cybersecurity professionals.

Barker’s next book, Confident Cyber Security: The Essential Insights and How to Protect from Threats, has been available since September 2023. I am looking forward to read it.
